At 15 years old, Angel Losada Gomez arrives from Spain to Mexico with the intention of working with his brother in Mexico City. He goes to Apan in Hidalgo where he works in the shop of his brother, which enables him to save money and start out on his own.
Don Angel starts "La Comercial" in Apan, Hidalgo. Beginnings of what later became in "Gigante". In this store, he initially sells seeds and groceries. Subsequently, the store would sell agricultural equipment and barley for malting operations in the region. Until now, this store remains in Apan under the name "La Moderna".
In November 28, 1962 in Mexico City, the first store of the chain, Gigante Mixcoac opens with 250 employees in store and 65 people in offices, conforming the cornerstone of Gigante. Since that moment, and until 1977 a total of 11 stores were opened in Mexico City and its Metropolitan Area.
Toks is the first restaurant opened near the Basilica de Guadalupe.
There are 32 stores in Mexico, in four cities: Mexico City, Guadalajara, Puebla and Queretaro. Since this year, and until 1990, 9 more stores would open in cities like Celaya, Acapulco, Morelia and Salamanca, as well as 12 more in Mexico City and its Metropolitan Area.
In July of that year, Gigante goes public in the Mexican Stock Exchange.
An association is made with the electronic goods company Radio Shack Corporation. The operation begins in stores with three different formats: Gigante, Bodega Gigante and Super Gigante. Gigante purchases the chains El Sardinero and Blanco, adding 43 more stores.
Partnership with Office Depot Inc. is initiated with a new concept of specialized office supply stores.
It was decided to reach the Latino market in the United States with the first Gigante USA store, in the city of Los Angeles, Ca. as well as becoming the first Mexican chain in that country.
A new challenge was started with the creation of Super Precio Stores. These are distinguished by having small and simple establishments with basic goods at affordable prices.
Located on the east of the country (Campeche, Yucatan, Tabasco, Chiapas and Quintana Roo).
New distribution center for fresh and meat opens at Tultitlan, Mexico. Dry distribution center in Monterrey is opened.
A total of 205 stores become part of Tiendas Soriana SA de CV. The Board of Directors approved the divestment on self-service business through the transaction in which the operation and administration of 205 stores become part of Tiendas Soriana SA de CV. This transaction included the protection and conservation of more than 24,000 jobs for employees of these stores and distribution centers. With these changes, we mark the beginning a new phase of consolidation, growth and investment for the Group in Mexico.
GGI, business unit responsible for managing real estate, properties of the Group and developing Real Estate Projects, begins operations. The joint venture project with Radio Shack Mexico is finalized.
Two Real Estate developments were approved: Corporativo Dos Patios and Tiendas San Esteban shopping center in Estado de Mexico. GGI Gran Terraza Lomas Verdes shopping center starts operations.
